Having had the opportunity to fish Lake Frodgem
on a few occassions I was keen to attack it seriously for a couple
of days. The first serious trip was arranged with Garry Castles
and Wes Alfredson was to accompany me. The itinerary was to attack
Frodgem over the cup long week end and hopefully see a few of the
larger fish as they targetted the mudeyes. As always the mudeye
thing was all hope but still a hit/miss affair.
Anyway the week end provided exceptional fishing
with 32 fish landed with 4 over 10 pounds and the latest releases
being around 6 pounds. The daytimes provided some damsel action
and come dark we had some mudeye action. After a week end like this
I was keen to let other fly fishers experience the quality fishing
this water could produce.
Well a few people got to experience this water and
most enjoyed it although the giant fish that this water had produced
previously were never landed and the fickle nature of trout waters
meant that mostly the exceptional mudeye hatches were missed by
the clients and made me feel a bit guilty when I would saunter up
between client groups for a quick look and the mudeyes would start
moving and make it impossible to not have a cast. One memorable
evening I landed 3 rainbows within 20 minutes of 4, 6 and 8 lb without
moving 5 metres. Then I was determined not to cast to any more feeding
fish as clients were arriving the next day, to eventually just give
in to the feeding activity around me and nail several browns in
the 6 - 9lb bracket.
Sebastian Leith's first experience on Frodgem was
3 browns of 9 1/4, 5 1/2 and 8 1/2 lbs in as many casts.
Thanks to Garry Castles for his efforts in maintaining
this fishery and the fishing fun that was had.
