The Rainbow Trout that we catch in Oceania are descended
from a North American steelhead strain and are generally a fast
growing and short lived fish which will run out to sea, or down
to a lake given the opportunity.
There are some self sustaining populations throughout
Tasmania, Australia and New Zealand.
In some instances these fish have done well in smaller landlocked
systems where many smaller fish can be encountered. Rainbow trout
have also established strong populations in some larger landlocked
systems such as those flowing into the larger North Island lakes,
such as Taupo, here the pseudo steelhead run each winter provides
sport for well conditioned and large rainbows.
Generally fly rods of 4, 5 and 6 weight will cover
most of the Rainbow Trout fishing you will encounter.
Rainbow Trout are targetted in many locations at
different times of the year. We recommend the following locations:
- New Zealand
- Chile
- Patagonia
- Alaska
