Trevally provide an excellent fly rod target and
even a small trevally on a six weight will provide a strong fight
with a ten or twleve weight fly rod being more suited to tackling
larger trevally.
There are many species of trevally and some of the
commonly caught fly rod ones include Golden, Silver, Brassy, Bluefin,
Giant, Gold Spot, Diamond and Bludger.
Trevally feed in many different ways and areas and
are therefore often encountered. They will generally take a fly
readily and the style of fly and tactics will be dictated by the
environment and situation. Polaroiding or prospecting for trevally
with a clouser is one method. Fishing to trevally chasing baitfish
with a surf candy style fly is another. Presenting a shrimp, crab
or baitfish pattern on the flats is another.
In some places the trevally will school with bonefish
or follow rays. During low tide trevally will often actively patrol
the edges of the flat or congregate in the holes and channels.
Trevally destinations include but are not limited
to:
- Pacific Ocean
Islands
- Indian Ocean Islands
- Hervey Bay
- Hinchinbrook
- Lord Howe and New Zealand
- Northern parts of Australia
- Mozambique Islands
