Or Kiritimati as it is known is in the
Line Island group and part of the Republic of Kiribati.
The Fishing
The Christmas Island fishery is fantastic in that
there is always somewhere in the lagoon that will provide outstanding
fishing regardless of which month you visit or time of day.
A good guide will have you hopping from flat to flat following the
bonefish as they move with the tide. You may experience tailing
fish on the first flat and then as the water deepens move to the
next flat to find the fish tailing there and so on.
Suprisingly the mornings provide the best fishing
with the middle of the day being hardest to see the fish and the
afternoon again showing the fishes shadow but the fish are more
likely to be fickle in their feeding behaviour.
The bonefish here are classed as small however larger
fish are present in good numbers and you are likely to see several
good bones in a day of fishing as well as many smaller fish. The
draw is the ability to fish the tide and the constant opportunities,
once you are properly immersed in Christmas Island you will just
think of them as bonefish and concentrate on fishing the best opportunities
presented rather than trying to target the bigger fish.
There are also many trevally in the lagoon with
bluefin, giant and brassy trevally being the most common. When the
tide is receding you will see bluefin trevally holding behind or
over cover as the current empties the flat past them. Many of these
bluefin trevally are quite large. The giant trevally will be seen
moving on the flats but can be flighty.
This is a fishery that lends itself well to a hosted
trip and Travelling Fly Fisher will arrange a host from amongst
the best saltwater guides in Australia, should you require one,
to ensure you have an excellent experience at Christmas Island and
the opportunity to develop your flats sight fishing skills.
