Fly fishing in Mozambique includes fresh and saltwater
destinations. The islands, Mozambique channel and many of the coastal
regions provide not only exceptional travel destinations but also
saltwater fly fishing opportunities for the travelling fly fisher.
The major drawcard for the travelling fly fisher
to Mozambique is the trophy tigerfish in the lower Zambezi. Fly
fishing camps are set up each year specifically to target the large
tigers that frequent these waters.
The lower Zambezi is a mighty river with a good
flow and many channels. The Zambezi River above Lake Cahora Bassa
is starting to slow down and has many braids and these vary from
100m to 2km wide, providing a huge range of interesting fishing
opportunities. A lot of large tigers will also come into the river
from the lake to spawn and feed.
The experience of a Zambezi sunrise or sunset, fly
fishing a river with the stature of the Zambezi - with chanels over
1km wide of fast moving water, and to feel Africa in every breath
is an experience that any travelling fly fisher will remember for
a long time.
There are many lodges on the lower Zambezi that
provide good tiger fishing opportunities but for the serious fly
fisher a specifically set up fishing camp with a fly fishing focus
will provide the best opportunity for the tiger of a lifetime.
The best season in this area is from June to September
and rate is approx $3500 p/person on a dual occupancy basis and
includes charter flight and road transfer, all meals, accommodation,
drinks and guiding.
